Pet Broken Bones

How Are Pet Broken Bones Treated?

At Fairway Knolls Veterinary Hospital, we are used to treating pets in the Bloomington area for emergencies. When it comes to pet care, one of the most common issues a veterinarian at our animal hospital will treat is a broken bone. We understand that pet owners are going to be concerned if their pet has a broken bone; however, our veterinary team has a quick and reliable way to treat these serious injuries.

The Treatment Process from Start to Finish

If a pet comes to see us with concerns about a broken bone, we want to hear about the accident first. We want to know when and how it happened.

After this, we are probably going to take x-rays of the limb. This is important for giving us a clear picture of how bad the injury is and whether the bone has been displaced. If the bone has been displaced, then the pet might need surgery to put the bone back in the proper place before it heals.

If a pet requires surgery, we will take the pet to the operating room and use anesthesia to put the pet to sleep. Then, a trained vet surgeon will repair the broken bone. Sometimes, nails or plates might be needed to hold the bone in the proper place.

One the bone is in the right spot; we will close the injury site. Then, we will place the injured limb in a cast so that it can heal properly. Broken bones take a few weeks to heal completely; however, we will be with you during this process.
