At Fairway Knolls Veterinary Hospital, we understand that your pet is a part of your family. But if you are going on vacation, you may be unable to bring your pet along for a number of reasons. In this case, you may be looking for a facility to board your pet. But do you know what to look for in such a facility? Here are a few of the things you should look for as you look for a location to board your pet.

The Cleanliness of the Facility

One of the key factors that you need to pay close attention to when you are picking out a boarding facility for your pet is the cleanliness of the facility. Take the time to walk around the facility and look at the kennels and the grounds where the pets eat, play and are walked. Does it look cleaned and well-kept? Or does it look dirty and smell funky? Be weary of places that do not look clean as they can make your pet sick or be unsanitary.

If Staff Members Are Onsite 24-7

Another element that you will want to pay attention to when you are selecting a place to board your pet is whether staff members are onsite 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some facilities do not employee individuals to watch your pets overnight. The downside to this is that if your pet has a medical emergency, there is no one around to tend to your pet or catch the problem. Always look for a facility who has at least one individual who is around all the time.

How Often Your Pet is Kenneled

The last factor that you need to pay attention to as you look for a facility to board your pet is how often the pet is kenneled or caged. Some facilities allow your pet to roam free as long as your pet is healthy and does well with other pets. Some facilities will take your pet out of the kennel or cage at certain times to walk your pet or for play time. Other facilities primarily keep your pet in a cage for most of the day. Always consider what your pet is used to at home and find a facility that offers your pet the exercise and care they are accustomed to.
