Getting started with veterinary care

When you get a new pet it is important to get them started with sound veterinary care, which that starts with vaccines. Pets can begin receiving vaccinations as early as a few weeks old. In the first year or so of the pet's life, there will need to be a series of vaccinations and some boosters to be sure your pet is completely healthy.

Core vs. non-core

Beyond the puppy stage, there are core and non-core vaccines. A core vaccine is one that is vital to all pets no matter where they live, is a rabies vaccine. Non-core vaccines are given depending on the risk your pet has of exposure. Bordetella is another good example of a non-core vaccine that is given only when needed. Bordetella is a necessary shot if you plan on boarding your pet at a kennel; however, if you do not it may not be a core vaccine. However, more prevention is better than less.

When to see a veterinarian

Your new puppy or kitten may need to see a veterinarian for various vaccinations a few times throughout the first year. After that, a yearly visit is enough for a healthy pet, often a yearly physical exam is recommended for all pets. An annual exam can usually include vaccinations that may still be needed. Your veterinarian can advise you on the best schedule for keeping your pet vaccinated against disease or illness. It will be important to constantly check with a veterinarian to determine if your pet’s vaccines
