How Does Spay or Neuter Surgery Work with our Bloomington Veterinarian?

Just like most of the country, Bloomington has unwanted, homeless dogs and cats. The lucky ones will get new homes, but some will have to be euthanized because there aren't enough people who want them. Spay and neuter surgeries sterilize pets so that they cannot contribute to this overpopulation problem.

When your female pet is spayed, a small incision is made in the abdomen (or less commonly, the flank) and the ovaries and uterus are removed. After this surgery, she can't get pregnant and won't have heats. She will also be much less likely to get mammary cancer or cancer of the reproductive tract.

When your male pet is neutered, the incision is typically made just in front of the scrotum, and the testes are removed. Adult male animals that have been neutered cannot get a female animal pregnant after approximately two weeks have passed. It takes this long for sperm that are present in the ducts of the reproductive tract to be eliminated. Male animals that are neutered do not get testicular cancer.

What Are Some Other Benefits of Spay and Neuter Surgery for Dogs and Cats?

Spaying or neutering your pet can also cause beneficial behavioral changes. Neutered animals of both sexes are much less likely to roam, which decreases their risk of getting hit by a car. Spayed females do not bleed and attract males for several weeks of the year. There is also some evidence that most dog bites are committed by unaltered dogs.

Cats that are neutered do not usually spray. Sharing an indoors with a tomcat is usually impossible because they will spray urine on everything. However, neutering removes 90 percent of this problem. Female cats that are spayed do not experience heats, so you don't have to live with the constant yowling.
