Common Allergies in Pets

Common Allergies in Pets

At Fairway Knolls Veterinary Hospital, we're familiar with treating the symptoms of allergies in pets. Cats and dogs can manifest symptoms of allergic reactions in a variety of ways. If you've noticed that your pet seems uncomfortable when exposed to certain foods, medications, or substances, they may have an allergy. At Fairway Knolls Veterinary Hospital, we can help you successfully manage the diagnosis and treatment for pet allergies, keeping your pet as comfortable as possible.

Numerous types of allergens may affect your pet and cause an allergic reaction, including:

  • Fleas
  • Food
  • Mold/mildew
  • Medications
  • Perfume
  • Cleaners

Route of Exposure

Your pet may experience exposure to an allergen by contact, through ingestion of the substance, or by inhaling the allergen. Any of these routes can cause a reaction, so it's important to pay careful attention to your pet's behavior and exposure as you work to determine what they are allergic to. Our veterinarian can guide you through the process of allergy testing and diagnosis.

Clinical Symptoms

Your pet can experience a variety of symptoms when exposed to allergens. They may have an upset stomach if they consume food that they're allergic to. They may have difficulty breathing if they inhale a perfume or chemical that they're allergic to. Inhaled allergens may also cause your pet to sneeze repeatedly. A contact allergy may cause a rash, excessive scratching, or may cause your pet to pull out their fur around the affected area. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact our vet immediately for assistance with and treatment.
